Thanksgiving is a wonderful occasion to spend time with family and friends as well as enjoy a great meal. Make sure your holiday doesn’t end up in flames and follow these safety precautions while cooking the Thanksgiving feast.
- Before plugging in all of your small appliances, make sure your kitchen GFI outlets are in good working order.
- Make sure your appliances are turned off after use.
- Never plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once or plug in extra appliances on extension cords or wall outlets. Use only outlets designed to handle multiple plugs. Also, know the amount of power you’re placing on an outlet or circuit.
- Use a timer when cooking. No one likes a burnt bird!
- Keep your cooking spaces clean and ensure that all grease and debris is cleaned up to prevent fires.
- Make sure all electrical wires are kept away from the stove top and not dangling off the counter to prevent small children from pulling on them.
- Deep fried turkey is delicious, but also dangerous. Misuse of a turkey fryer can result in an explosion and serious burns. Only use a turkey fryer outside and away from your home, garage, decks or anything else that may catch fire. Don’t overfill the oil or leave the turkey fryer unattended.
- Just in case, make sure all of your smoke detectors are in good working order. Also, keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
