In 2024, The Wall Street Journal published an article, “How Gen Z Is Becoming the Toolbelt Generation” (paywall), about students choosing the trades over traditional four-year colleges. There were many reasons, including lower educational costs, less time in the classroom, increased earnings for skilled labor because of skilled-labor shortages and investing in AI-proof professions. I can attest that this trend is real. Enrollment in technical colleges like mine has risen sharply. But many educators and employers are noticing something else: that the toolbelt generation may be missing a few important tools—specifically emotional maturity, social skills and accountability.
