In a jobs apocalypse, look to ‘AI-proof’ skilled trades, career experts say

James Vandall, 25, said his interest in becoming an electrician first sparked, so to say, when workers were recently redoing the wiring on the third floor of his home. “I asked them how I could go about getting into that trade,” he said. Part of the appeal, he said, was working with his hands. “Initially, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. I went to college and then left,” he said. “I sort of bounced around from job to job throughout the years until I eventually landed on trades.”

In 2024, The Wall Street Journal published an article, “How Gen Z Is Becoming the Toolbelt Generation” (paywall), about students choosing the trades over traditional four-year colleges. There were many reasons, including lower educational costs, less time in the classroom, increased earnings for skilled labor because of skilled-labor shortages and investing in AI-proof professions. I can attest that this trend is real. Enrollment in technical colleges like mine has risen sharply. But many educators and employers are noticing something else: that the toolbelt generation may be missing a few important tools—specifically emotional maturity, social skills and accountability.
